MY STORY…SUSAN JACOBS
“Your story is one of learning to listen to the whispers of your soul.” — Dr. Beth DuPree, Co-Host of interview with me on Women to Watch with Sue Rocco
Minutes From Dead in Ghana
A 6-figure, perk-filled VP salary and hanging with musicians like Etta James, Ziggy Marley, James Galway, The Chieftains, Rachael Yamagata, and Cesaria Evora…what could be wrong with that?
The reality? A 20-ish year career in entertainment marketing and PR had sucked the life out of me. Always helping others achieve their goals and dreams, I lost myself in the process. That morning, the aha was, ‘What about my dreams and goals?’
So, I got a contract buy-out and decided to go to Ghana, West Africa for two months.
Time to reconnect with myself, recharge, and gain clarity about my life as I did a Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training program. But on day 9, I almost died from severe malaria. Minutes from dead, my life was saved by an amazing African Ayurvedic doctor. It forever changed me.
Clarity gained: I’m a storyteller and giving voice to things that matter is what lights my fire.
Whether personally or for brands, without clarity, knowing your ‘why,’ what makes you different, and identifying and owning your voice and truth, forward movement isn’t possible.
Over the years, this took form for me via writing, producing immersive, experiential, out-of-the-box events and campaigns, or coming up with unique marketing, branding, or communications strategies for an eclectic mix of clients in the US, Africa, Haiti, and Europe. It was my fuel.

33 Countries Visited… A Brand New 52-Page Passport
Since childhood, travelling has fed my spirit and creativity and been a great source of inspiration and joy. Thus far, I’ve been to 33 countries and have no intention of slowing down. My preference? Far-away lands that require a passport.
In addition to personal travel, I've had unique international work experiences. In Haiti, I consulted with the Ministries of Tourism and the Environment and the Ministry of Tourism, and brokered commodities deals within the private sector.
In Angola, I produced a multi-media international awareness-building campaign introducing Western audiences to Angolan Kuduro music and dance, which included live events in Luanda, Angola, Europe, and the U.S.
My years of expertise are enriched by the life-changing experiences I’ve had crossing borders and cultures while traveling off-the-beaten-path.
Holistically Healing My Hyperthyroid & Graves’ Disease
Diagnosed with a hyperthyroid and Graves’ disease in the early 1990s, I had to face the truth… with my life in danger, could I hold onto my belief that I could heal myself holistically and not cave to Western medicine?
Faced with this reality, I was going to have to walk the walk and stand tall in order to navigate the traditional and alternative medical worlds.
I did heal my hyperthyroid and Graves’ disease holistically. It wasn’t easy, but coming out the other side and holding true to my heart was completely worth it.
The Early Days
Prior to launching BlueZan Consulting, in addition to serving as Vice President, Worldwide Publicity for RCA Victor Group, at BMG, at Sony Classical with the same title, I orchestrated campaigns for Yo-Yo Ma, The Three Tenors, Joshua Bell, Joe Jackson, and more.
During my early career, I created and implemented national marketing and communications campaigns for major independent film distributors, television networks, and film festivals.
A small sampling of the amazing films I helped launch include Sling Blade, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Trip to Bountiful, Dirty Dancing, Sid and Nancy, Paris is Burning, Brother's Keeper, Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It, Jim Jarmusch’s Down by Law, and David Byrne’s True Stories.
I co-founded, and for seven years managed Kahn & Jacobs, a leading entertainment marketing and public relations agency in New York and was named one of The Hollywood Reporter’s 26 “Power Players” of the New York film industry.
Holistic healing has been part of my life since being a teenager. I’m a certified Kundalini yoga teacher, certified Pilates teacher and Shiatsu massage therapist.
Salsa dancing is my passion and therapy. When I'm not working or writing you’ll find me shaking my booty on the dance floor!
